COUNTRYSIDE ALLIANCE LAUNCHES FIREARMS LICENSING E-LOBBY AS RETAILERS FACE POTENTIAL IMPACT
The Countryside Alliance has launched a new e-lobby campaign ahead of the government’s anticipated consultation on firearms licensing reform. Proposed changes aim to align elements of shotgun and firearm legislation in England, Scotland and Wales a move that could have serious implications for certificate holders and for the broader shooting industry, including firearms retailers.
While the campaign is directed at the wider shooting and countryside community, Gun Trade Insider advises all registered firearms dealers to contact their local MP and outline the potential negative impacts these proposals could have on their business. Licensing restrictions may influence customer demand, reduce entry into the shooting sports, and add complexity to transactions, affecting both turnover and long-term viability.
The Countryside Alliance warns that the suggested reforms may do little to enhance public safety while risking considerable damage to rural economies and the UK’s shooting sector.
Through the e-lobby platform, individuals can enter their postcode to generate a message to their local MP. The campaign encourages participants to raise three key points:
• The real-world impact the proposals may have on lawful shooting activity and related businesses
• The economic, environmental and social benefits of shooting that are now at risk
• Alternative, proportionate steps the government could take to strengthen public safety
“This is a pivotal moment for the future of shooting,” states the Countryside Alliance. “We need everyone who values shooting and the countryside to make their voice heard. The more people that contact their MP, the brighter and stronger shooting’s future will be.”
This e-lobby is intended for residents of England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland operates under a separate licensing system and is not affected by the current proposals.
