Paul Quinton has joined FirearmsLicensing.net as a consultant and subject matter expert, bringing more than 21 years of frontline firearms licensing experience with Essex Police, alongside an earlier military career.
Quinton spent over two decades within Essex Police’s firearms, shotgun and explosives licensing department, beginning as a firearms enquiry officer and progressing to deputy firearms licensing manager. During this time, he led on complex suitability assessments, provided specialist technical advice, supported the implementation of new legislation and engaged with national stakeholders and partner agencies.
His tenure also saw improvements in the force’s firearms licensing performance, contributing to its progression within national rankings. He was involved in strengthening engagement with registered firearms dealers, shooting clubs and representative bodies, supporting a more collaborative and transparent approach to licensing.
Prior to his policing career, Quinton served in the British Army from 1981 to 2004. His roles included service as a Coldstream Guards sniper and later as warrant officer class 1 staff assistant (custodial) for the Provost Marshal, where he was involved in inspections, custodial oversight, logistics and policy development.
Quinton is also a former international-level marksman, having represented the British Army and achieved selection for the Army 100. He remains active in the shooting sector through involvement in syndicates, deer management and clay shooting, and serves as a CPSA safety officer.
In his role with FirearmsLicensing.net, Quinton will provide advisory support to forces, organisations and individuals, offering practical, evidence-based guidance aimed at improving consistency, raising standards and strengthening trust across the firearms licensing system.
