BERETTA UNVEILS A400L: A REFINED SEMI-AUTO BUILT FOR COMPETITIVE CLAY SHOOTERS

Beretta has launched the A400L, a premium evolution of its iconic A400 Xcel Sporting platform, aimed squarely at the competitive clay market. With upgraded components, enhanced handling, and striking aesthetics, the A400L brings new life to one of the most trusted semi-automatic actions in the industry.

This latest model blends Beretta’s mechanical reliability with the elegance and craftsmanship the brand is known for. The A400L features a fully engraved, nickel-plated receiver and a high-grade 2.5+ European walnut stock and forend, redesigned for improved grip and ergonomics. The checkering has been expanded and refined, while an ambidextrous palm swell ensures control and comfort across all shooting disciplines.

At the heart of the A400L is Beretta’s proven B-Link® gas-operated system. This ultra-fast mechanism uses a rotating bolt and self-cleaning cross-tube gas piston to deliver 36 percent faster cycling, offering smooth operation, reduced recoil, and increased stability across various loads. Thanks to revised gas porting and minimal mechanical friction, residue build-up is kept to a minimum – reducing the need for frequent maintenance.

A standout feature of the A400L is its coldhammer-forged Steelium® Plus barrel. With a triple forcing cone extending up to 320mm, this barrel provides superior terminal energy, reduced muzzle rise, and consistent shot patterns across all ammunition types, including steel and high-performance loads. The barrel is topped with a 10x8mm rib and is supplied with three interchangeable Optimachoke® HP chokes (M, IM, IC), manufactured from high-strength steel for added durability and corrosion resistance.

Beretta has paid close attention to the shooter’s interaction with the shotgun. The A400L’s trigger group is made from aluminium for a lighter, crisper pull and shorter reset. It includes a competition-style pro-lifter which stays raised when the bolt is closed, allowing for faster and more intuitive loading – particularly for shooters using dual or quad-load techniques. Additional enhancements include a redesigned loading port, extended bolt handle, and oversized bolt release for easier manipulation during competitive shooting.

One of the most innovative features is the inclusion of Beretta’s new B-Balance® magazine cap. Constructed from anodised aluminium and steel, this component allows shooters to fine-tune the gun’s overall weight using internal inserts. Weighing 85 grams in its base configuration and 140 grams with all inserts installed, it provides an additional degree of personalisation for balance and swing characteristics.

A DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) finish has been applied to the bolt carrier group, magazine release, and trigger. This ultra-hard coating reduces friction, enhances durability, and gives the shotgun a modern, high-performance aesthetic. A subtle acid-green ‘B-Link’ detail on the bolt adds a touch of contrast to the otherwise refined, engraved receiver.

The A400L is chambered in 12-gauge and available with barrel lengths of 28 inches, 30 inches, or 32 inches. It ships with a redesigned Beretta hard case, constructed from injection-moulded polymer for improved protection and presentation.

“The speed, reliability, and comfort of Beretta A400 platform and its B-Link® gas-system have become a worldwide benchmark for semi-auto shotguns, both in hunting and competition shooting,” explained Daniele Piva, vice president business commercial market at Fabbrica d’Armi Pietro Beretta.

“The A400L continues this legacy, while adding up some of the most advanced technical features the market can offer: the unparalleled, long-established Beretta Steelium® barrel technology in its Plus version and DLC finishes to allow Beretta semi-auto mechanism to flow smoother than ever. The exquisite touches on the engraving and wood are a beautiful evolution of what we have been doing on over&unders for years.”

Additional features include Beretta’s popular Microcore® recoil pad, which is made from open-cell polyurethane. It offers superior comfort and expands after firing to maximise contact with the shooter’s shoulder, ensuring better control and reduced felt recoil. Different pad sizes and optional spacers allow for length-of-pull adjustment.

Retailers will also appreciate the strong heritage underpinning the model. Founded in 1526, Beretta remains one of the most respected names in the industry. The A400L builds on this legacy by modernising a proven platform without compromising its reputation for performance and longevity.

Retailers looking to refresh their semi-auto line-up with a proven competition performer that combines Italian craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology should contact GMK today to discuss trade terms and availability.

MAXIMUM EFFECTIVE RANGE
The maximum effective range of a rifle has been a hotly debated topic for many years. Many of us will have seen such posts on internet forums. One person being mocked for their suggestion that their .308Win is only good for 800m. Another called out for being a liar because their claim of 2000m seems absurd! In truth they may both be right and it comes down to how we define “max range” and the context around it. Paul Bradley explains…
