CRIEFF HYDRO SECURES APPROVAL FOR CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING RANGE WITH NOISE RESTRICTIONS
Crieff Hydro, located in Perthshire, Scotland, is set to introduce clay pigeon shooting as part of its outdoor activity offerings after receiving renewed planning approval from Perth and Kinross Council. The hotel expects to have the shooting range operational by Easter.
The project was initially granted temporary planning permission in September 2022, but with that approval due to expire later this year, the hotel sought an extension. Councillors have now approved the plans through to September 2028, but with conditions to address concerns from local residents.
Under the terms of the approval, only low-noise cartridges and shotguns fitted with suppressors can be used on the site, which is located just over 1km north of the main hotel buildings. These measures follow objections from nearby residents, who raised concerns about noise levels impacting their quality of life.
The introduction of clay shooting at Crieff Hydro is likely to benefit local gun shops and outdoor retailers, as visitors and guests look to purchase cartridges, shooting accessories, and apparel. With an established venue introducing more people to the sport, there could also be increased demand for gun fitting services, lessons, and specialist equipment, offering opportunities for businesses catering to the shooting community.
The approval aligns with Crieff Hydro’s broader strategy of expanding its outdoor activities, which already include golf, zip lines, and rope courses. The move contrasts with the struggles of other hospitality businesses in the area, with some hotels facing closure and demolition due to declining footfall.
A local supporter of the project highlighted the economic benefits, arguing that businesses like Crieff Hydro should be encouraged to invest and evolve to maintain their viability.
With final preparations under way, the hotel expects to welcome guests to the new clay shooting range in time for the Easter season.
