UK DEFENCE CHIEFS LOOK TO AIRSOFT INDUSTRY FOR RECRUITMENT BOOST

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is looking to the airsoft industry to help improve military recruitment, with a new contract worth up to £120,000 for the procurement of imitation firearms. The MOD states that airsoft systems have already proven to be one of the most effective engagement tools for attracting potential recruits, and the latest initiative aims to expand and enhance their use.
According to the procurement notice, the MOD’s Engage to Recruit (EtR) programme has found that airsoft weapons have had a strong positive effect on the Army’s image and recruitment efforts. The MOD is now inviting experts and suppliers from the airsoft sector to submit proposals by 28 March to supply equipment for further outreach campaigns.
For airsoft retailers and suppliers, this initiative represents a potential business opportunity and could bring additional visibility to the sector. The MOD’s recognition of airsoft as an effective engagement tool validates its appeal to younger audiences, which could encourage wider acceptance and growth of the sport.
With high-end airsoft rifles ranging in price from £250 to over £1,700, the industry already caters to a committed player base. However, a government-backed initiative could lead to an increase in demand, particularly for realistic imitation firearms (RIFs) and a wide range of supporting equipment.
Despite strict UK airsoft legislation under the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 (VCRA), the MOD’s approach suggests a shift towards embracing airsoft as a recruitment and training tool rather than simply a recreational activity. If successful, this programme could generate new supply opportunities for retailers and broaden the reach of airsoft beyond specialist players.
With the MOD’s deadline approaching, airsoft businesses now have the chance to engage with the defence sector, potentially leading to long-term collaboration and further investment in the UK airsoft industry.
