FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
Hello and welcome to the August issue of GTI. This month, our magazine is brimming with expert insights designed to keep you well-informed about the dynamics of the UK trade.
Topping our agenda is the reaction to our new Labour government. Within these pages, you’ll find perspectives from several key figures within our industry. Despite the initial concerns that overshadowed the shooting sector following Labour’s strong performance in the elections, the outlook might be less dire than initially feared.
As highlighted by Simon West on page 16, our new Minister for Crime, Policing, and Fire, Dame Diana Johnson, appears to be a sensible and intelligent operator. While only time will reveal the full scope of her views, early indications suggest she may not be inclined to impose further restrictions on shooting.
Moving beyond gun laws, Mike Hurney offers some compelling commentary on page 4 about the cost-of-living crisis, which I believe is the fundamental issue currently affecting our industry. The financial strain on consumers is palpable; with rising costs for essentials like food and fuel, and stagnant wages, discretionary spending on hobbies is understandably one of the first areas to suffer cuts.
It’s clear that our economic environment requires careful handling. Sensible, well-considered government policies can reassure those controlling financial levers. Over time, this may lead to lower interest rates and a reduction in the financial pressures facing consumers, allowing more room for investment in their passions, including shooting and hunting.
Elsewhere in this issue, I’m delighted to welcome two new faces to our ever-growing team of writers and experts. Head over to page 18 to read Nick Doherty’s take on firearm certificate disclosure. Nick is a barrister specialising in firearms licensing law, a member of the Council of the GTA, and co-author of the Firearms Law Handbook.
We also have Emily Damment on board; she’ll be talking to you, the dealers, to find out how retailers are evolving their business and offering advice for newcomers, first up is Nick Cross from Premier Guns. Have a read on page 22.
Thank you for joining us for another issue of GTI, where we continue to delve into the issues that matter most to our community. Your engagement and feedback are invaluable to us, and as always, we look forward to navigating these complex times together.
Have a great trading month.
