Sam Garfield, a gunmaker at T.R. White & Co Gunmakers, has been named as one of 12 recipients of the 2026 Lady Mayor’s Livery Apprentice awards.
The awards recognise outstanding apprentices from across the London Livery Companies, highlighting individuals who demonstrate skill, commitment and contribution within their respective trades. Garfield completed his four-year apprenticeship in August, supported by a bursary from The Gunmakers Trust, which provides financial assistance to help develop the next generation of skilled professionals within the gun trade.
Garfield has also applied to the certification panel at the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers for formal accreditation, marking the next step in his professional development.
In comments supporting his nomination, Garfield was described as demonstrating the qualities expected of a modern craft apprentice, including strong technical ability, enthusiasm and a collaborative approach within a workshop environment. His contribution extends across multiple areas of the business, from bench work through to customer interaction and event support.
The citation noted that his commitment to quality and work ethic stand out, alongside a clear sense of responsibility and pride in the trade. His role within the business has been characterised not only by technical skill but also by his willingness to contribute to the wider success of the workshop.
The recognition reflects the continued importance of apprenticeship pathways within the UK gun trade, particularly in preserving traditional skills while supporting the development of new talent. Initiatives such as those led by The Gunmakers Trust play a key role in enabling businesses to invest in training and ensure the long-term sustainability of specialist craftsmanship.
Garfield’s award places him among a small group of apprentices recognised across a range of historic trades, underlining the relevance of gunmaking within the broader landscape of British craft industries.
