MID-SEASON RESET ON THE SHOP FLOOR

In the first of our new Retail Edge series, Gun Trade Insider shares five practical tips each month to help retailers improve sales, margin and shop floor performance.

June sits in an interesting position for the trade. The early-season momentum has settled, peak demand is still ahead and many retailers find themselves carrying stock that has either performed well or failed to move as expected. It is an ideal moment to reset, refocus and make practical changes that can deliver immediate results.

REWORK SLOW STOCK INTO OPPORTUNITY

Every shop carries stock that has not performed as expected. The mistake is often leaving it in the same place, hoping it will eventually sell. Instead, treat slow stock as a merchandising opportunity. Move it into higher-traffic areas, place it alongside stronger-selling products, or build simple bundles that increase perceived value. For example, a slow-moving rifle or airgun can be paired with mounts, pellets or a basic accessory kit to create a more complete offering. Equally important is how the product is described. If staff are not actively recommending it, customers are unlikely to consider it. A brief conversation with the team about where these products fit and who they suit can often unlock sales without any need for discounting.

“CUSTOMERS RARELY ACT WITHOUT A PROMPT. MAJOR PROMOTIONS HAVE THEIR PLACE, SMALLER, MORE SUBTLE TRIGGERS CAN BE JUST AS EFFECTIVE.”

PRIORITISE MARGIN OVER VOLUME

It is easy to fall into the trap of chasing sales volume, particularly in quieter periods, but not all sales contribute equally to the business. June is a good time to review which products deliver the strongest margins and ensure they are given the prominence they deserve. This might mean repositioning certain accessories near the counter, encouraging staff to recommend higher-margin alternatives, or simply being more selective about where discounts are applied. A £50 accessory with a strong margin can often contribute more to the bottom line than a heavily discounted core product. By shifting focus from turnover to profitability, retailers can improve performance without needing to increase footfall.

TIGHTEN THE SHOP FLOOR LAYOUT

Over time, even well-presented shops can become cluttered. New products are added, displays evolve, and the original logic behind the layout can become diluted. Taking a fresh look at the shop floor from a customer’s perspective can be revealing. Are key categories clearly defined? Can a customer quickly understand where to find what they need? Grouping products by use rather than brand often makes the buying process more intuitive. For example, placing optics, mounts and related accessories together creates a natural decision-making journey. Clear pricing and simple signage also play a role, reducing friction and helping customers move from browsing to buying more confidently.

REFRESH STAFF PRODUCT FOCUS

Staff knowledge remains one of the most valuable assets in any gun shop, but it requires regular attention. By mid-year, it is worth revisiting key product lines and ensuring everyone is aligned on how they should be positioned. This does not need to be a formal training session. A short, focused discussion on a handful of priority products can be enough. Cover what makes them different, who they are best suited to, and how they compare to alternatives. Encouraging staff to share their own experiences can also add credibility. When team members speak with confidence and clarity, customers are more likely to trust their recommendations and commit to a purchase.

CREATE REASONS TO BUY NOW

Customers rarely act without a prompt. While major promotions have their place, smaller, more subtle triggers can be just as effective. This might include highlighting seasonal relevance, such as products suited to summer use, or drawing attention to limited availability on certain lines. Even simple messaging, whether in-store or through social media, can create a sense of timing that encourages action. The key is to give customers a reason to make a decision today rather than postponing it. This approach helps maintain steady sales without relying heavily on discounting, preserving both margin and brand perception.

June is about making considered, practical adjustments that improve how the business operates day to day. By focusing on presentation, profitability and staff engagement, retailers can strengthen their position ahead of the more demanding months to come.
