IMPORTANCE OF RURAL VOICES HIGHLIGHTED AT CONSERVATIVE CONFERENCE
The vital role of rural voices in shaping national policy was emphasised during the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, where Shadow Environment Secretary Steve Barclay MP spoke at a joint reception hosted by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) and the Angling Trust.
Addressing a packed audience, Barclay underscored the significance of shooting to rural communities, not only for its economic and conservation benefits but also for its broader social impact. “Shooting and the work BASC does are part of the rural identity. It’s a complex picture, and it is important that you are listened to,” he said, adding, “The Conservative Party will work responsibly in opposition to speak up for BASC, rural sports, and the rural way of life.”
Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), also highlighted the ongoing efforts to strengthen cross-party collaboration on rural issues. “We have been busy reforming the group since the General Election. It’s important that we have a true cross-party group, and I’m delighted that we continue to have the backing of BASC as the Secretariat of the APPG,” he said, praising BASC’s work in supporting shooting and rural communities.
